Drink and be merry: 4 holiday cocktail ideas

Celebration Christmas Food & Drinks Ideas & Tips New Year Seasonal Winter

It's that time of year again: Time to raise a glass with family and friends and toast to being safe inside with food, drink and a functional heating system. The holiday season is one of the biggest times of year for cocktails, given all the swanky parties that go on, so it stands to reason that there are an abundance of holiday cocktail ideas to choose from. Impress your friends and coworkers at parties by trying some of these out:

  • Rosemary-scented champagne: Add rosemary-flavored simple syrup and a shot of rum to a flute of champagne for a holiday flavor with a bit of a bite. Squeeze fresh lemon into the mixture to finish it off.
  • Foggy dew: According to Food & Wine, this is an "Irish take on eggnog", and it packs all the punch its ethnic origins might imply. Combine whiskey, rum, sherry, half and half, vanilla simple syrup and an egg in a cocktail shaker, then garnish with nutmeg. Consume with caution.
  • Hot spiced wine: What could be better than red wine on a cold day? Hot spiced red wine, of course. Steep mulling spices (cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, peppercorn and cardamom) in a saucepan of red wine, then add kirsch for a tart cherry kick. Can be served with various sliced fresh fruits, like sangria.
  • Pomegranate-orange white wine cocktail: For those who love tart, fruity drinks, this festive white wine drink will be a seasonal standby. Combine dry white wine with cognac, pomegranate juice and orange juice. Pour over muddled mint and serve with ice.
